F1001 - Fiber Optics for Technicians

Course Description:
This 4-day fiber course is a lab-intensive HANDS-ON course and will get your technicians into the fiber optic generation. If you are, or are planning to install and maintain fiber optic cables, it will pay to take this course. If you do not get training on this subject, chances are you will be doing the work over, or paying someone else to straighten up the mess. Don't rely on the "free" sales guy training to make this stuff work. This lab intensive course will train technicians how to properly install, terminate and test indoor fiber optic cables the first time. Students will learn how to prevent damaging cables during the install, and prepare them for termination. Cables will be terminated, placed in patch panels and tested right in the classroom. All procedures will follow EIA/TIA/ANSI/ISO standards, and/or company practice. All of the mistakes you make in this course are cheap, compared to making them in the field.

This course will also train students to properly and safely splice fiber optic cables. Students will prepare an outside plant fiber cable for splicing in a fiber optic enclosure. Splicing methods that will be taught are fusion and mechanical. Ribbon splicing will be addressed if applicable. All fiber splices made in lab practice will be tested with an OTDR. Students will learn how to test fiber using an OTDR and a power meter & light source. Students will test and troubleshoot a fiber optic network with power meter and light sources. Students will design a simple fiber optic network according to the instructor's guidelines, and more.
